What I learned after travelin for 404 days
Traveling for 400 days. Definitely the most incredible year of my life – unforgettable experiences, crazy stories, new friends, but mostly, all the amazing things I learned with the trip.
I learned that we are capable of much more than we believe we are. I slept at outdoor areas, without a tent or a bed. I hitchhiked at the roads. I managed to communicate with people that don´t speak the same language. I spent eight rainy days trekking in Nepal with a bunch of leeches over me.
I learned to live in another rhythm – I used to do everything running, being late, using the snooze alarm, running after the buses. I learned to avoid this stress, to save free time for me, to meditate and to be more focused in myself.
I learned to listen carefully. It may sound as a cliché, but we are used to talk about ourselves, not paying as much attention as we should at people´s problems or stories.
I learned to live at the edge. In this trip I lived without comfort for a long time, and I realized that the more you get used to live on a simple way, the more you start enjoying the small things. I got incredibly happy every time I had a hot shower or a soft mattress! Many of the happiest people I met were exactly the ones that had a simple life.
To have more faith in people. We are so strongly surrounded by bad news that we eventually think that the human being is bad in general. The majority of the people I met during the trip were exactly the opposite – I don´t even remember how many times strangers helped with information, picking me up when I was hitchhiking, or even with food or a place to spend the night!
I learned to give a damn about the appearances, and about the other people´s opinion. And I found out that Brazil is one of the countries where people care more about that! Hair straightening, surgery for huge boops, hair highlights, clothes with colors that match… At the end I was using sandals with socks and no sign of make up at all…
To accept and take it easy with the problems that happen at the trip, and to even miss them when they didn´t happen. If the trip was all scheduled previously, certainly I wouldn´t have so many stories to tell! I learned to be always open hearted to what may happen, and to see the good side of everything. I learned that there´s no right or wrong. And to not be ashamed to ask questions.
That we can live with much less things than we think we can. I spent a whole year wearing the very same clothes that fit on a backpack, and I´m still alive!
I learned not to fear taking risks or trying different things. To live without plans, not even knowing where I would be on the next day – to really live the present. And that´s exactly what I am doing right now. I´m going back home, past one year traveling. Not knowing what I´m gonna do after that. But one thing I know: that everything is gonna work out, as it always did during this World Trip. Just let it happen!

Oi Carol, I just want to say that you’re an inspiration! I can’t wait to see you in Curitiba to hear some of your stories in person and share some of my biking adventures in the north of Brazil. Hopefully when I arrive you’ll still be there and not halfway across the world! ;) Thank you for inspiring me and surely so many others everywhere you go! Beijos, Pierre
Hey Pierre, nice to hear from you! Tell me when you arrive in Curitiba! ;)
Awesome post! There is so much the world can teach us, we just need to be quiet and listen. Personally I’ve been on the road for 4.5 years and 2015 is looking real busy. I relate to every single point your wrote about. Stay light and safe travels!
Thanks Shane! Wow, 4,5 years is a lot! I hope to travel again soon!!
Cheers!
