Loads of elephants and Kilimanjaro as the background
Amboseli is a beautiful reserve close to the Tanzania border, famous for the amazing views of the wildlife with Kilimanjaro as a background. You´ll see lots of elephants in a visit to a park, but you can never get tired of them.

HOW TO VISIT THE RESERVE
To visit Amboseli you have to do a game drive – you need a 4×4 car, and it´s highly recommended doing it with a guide that knows the area. The park is huge, you´re very likely not to see many animals if you go by yourself.
Also, the guides talk to each other all the time on the radio, telling where they saw some animals – that´s how you get to see so much!
Blogger’s tip: Amboseli is far away from Nairobi – you´d better reserve a day just to get there and sleep in the reserve, so that you can start an early game drive on the next day.

HOW IS THE GAME DRIVE
It´s worth to start the game drive early in the morning – the views from the Kilimanjaro are much better before 9AM, and during most of the days it gets completely hidden behind the clouds after that time, for the whole day.
You do the game drive in a bus with a pop-up roof, which is perfect for watching the animals, as you have a 360 degrees view.
There´s a big swamp in Amboseli – during the day the animals go there, for food and refreshment, so it´s an awesome area to see lots of wildlife.
It´s not that common to see lions there, but it´s possible – we saw 5 different ones. We also saw a cheetah there.

In Amboseli there aren´t as many roads as in Maasai Mara, so many times you end up not being so close to the animals, unless they´re close to the roads (it´s not allowed to drive out of the roads).
There are loads of elephants in Amboseli, you´ll definitely see lots of them in a safari. The most famous picture of the park is of an elephant with Kilimanjaro as the background – it´s not very easy to take it, though, as Kili ends up hidden behind the clouds most of the day, and many times the elephants are not in the “right” position.
You can see many different kinds of animals in Amboseli: lots of giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, elephants, antelopes, birds… There aren´t many predators, but you can spot some lions and cheetahs!
Blogger’s tip: if you´re planning to visit both Amboseli and Maasai Mara, I´d suggest to visit Amboseli first, as Maasai Mara has more wildlife – once you see so much, you may get spoiled and maybe you won´t appreciate Amboseli the way you would if you´d been there first.
There´s an amazing viewpoint that you can´t miss – is a place where you leave the car and go walking up the hill. From the top you have a pretty view of the lakes, and also the elephants wandering around at the swamp. It´s also a good spot for a lunch break.
EATING
The only restaurants inside the reserve are at the lodges. The best thing to do is to carry your lunch with you. At the safari we took lunch boxes, and we had a picnic at the park. The lunch box was very good, we had chicken, sandwich, cake, orange, water and juice.
In the tour the meals, water and accommodation are included – we had dinner and breakfast at the Camping/Lodge.

SLEEPING
When you book the tour, you can choose between sleeping in camping (Tented Camp – you can read more about it here) or in lodges. My tour was supposed to be all in Tented Camps (I would stay at Kimana Camp), but they didn´t have anyone to cook, so they ended up upgrading me to a lodge.
I stayed at AA Lodge, a very beautiful and fancy hotel. The rooms are in cottages, with a huge area, double bed and an extra one, couches, table, wardrobe, locker, facilities for making tea or coffee, and a huge private bathroom, with towels, shampoo, soap and body lotion. The lodge has a swimming pool, and the restaurant is very good.
