A game drive in one of the most known parks in Tanzania
Tarangire is one of the most visited parks in Tanzania, close to Arusha (about 2h), a good place to start a safari that lasts for some days in the Northern part of the country.
The park is known for the many elephants, and also for its baobabs, the impressive upside down trees. It´s usually visited in a safari combined with Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro Crater, that are nearby. I visited Tarangire during a game drive with Greg Adventures, which was great.

HOW TO VISIT THE PARK
To visit Tarangire you have to do a game drive. You can either do it by yourself, renting a 4×4 car, and if you want you can hire a guide at the park (it´s not mandatory at Tarangire).
The other option is to do it hire a tour company to organize the safari – it might be more expensive than the first option, but you don´t have to worry about anything, just relax. Also, in the safaris the meals and accommodation are included, and you get to see lots of animals if you have an experienced guide.
I visited it in a 2 days tour from Arusha, with Greg Adventures. The safari was great, I would recommend it.

HOW IS THE GAME DRIVE
Tarangire is big, but a half day game drive can be enough to see lots of wildlife. It takes at least two hours to get there from Arusha, so in case you want to spend the whole day doing the safari, make sure you leave very early.
In the safari I did with Greg Adventures, we left Arusha at 8:30, but stopped quite a lot on the way, so we didn´t enter the park before lunch. We saw lots of animals, especially elephants (Tarangire is known for its elephants), but also giraffes, zebras, pumbas, wildebeests, antelopes, and even a lioness and her cubs.
The Game Drive happens in a very comfy 4×4 car that has a pop-up roof – it´s perfect for seeing the animals, as it gives you a 360 degrees view of the area.
Additionally you can visit a Maasai village after you leave the park. It´s interesting to learn about the way of living of this tribe, and to learn about their culture, but it´s very touristy, and they will insist that you have to buy some souvenir before you leave. The entrance fee is 50 U$ dollars per car.

EATING
There aren´t restaurants inside the reserve, just lodges. The best thing to do is to bring some lunch with you. At the safari we took lunch boxes, and we had a picnic at the park. The lunch box was very good, we had chicken, a sandwich, a cake, a banana, samosa, pancake and juice.
In the tour, the meals, water and accommodation included – we had dinner at the Camping/Lodge.

SLEEPING
There are lodges and campsites inside the park – I just spent the day, and slept at one of the Lake Manyara’s campsite (Lilac).
At Lilac Campsite and Lodge they have all sorts of accommodation: tented camps, normal tents and rooms. The tented camps are a good option, they´re cheaper than the rooms and very comfortable – they even have toilet and shower inside!
