Things to do in Batad

Amazing Rice Terraces in Batad

A small village surrounded by mountains and rice terraces built in different levels, with a roots vibe. This is Batad, in Philippines, an amazing destination!

Batad is located nearby Banaue, which can also be visited to see its rice terraces, though the ones in Batad are much more well preserved.

It´s a laid back place, perfect to chill out and to read a book, but also good to hike in the rice terraces and to visit a waterfall.

RICE TERRACES

Definitely the main attraction in Batad! The rice terraces were built hundreds of years ago, in different levels, to make a good use of the rain.

The best time to visit is when the fields are green, after the rainy season, from January to May. I was there in December, they were already green, but it rained a lot while I was there.

The hike to the viewpoint at the Rice Terraces is easy, it takes about 1 hour to go and to come back.

To find a guide there is a piece of cake – it seems that everybody in Batad is a guide, they offer you their services all the time! But you don´t need a guide to go there, it´s easy to find your way through the trail until the viewpoint.

You´d better wear hiking shoes to do the hike – you can also do it wearing flip flops, but it can be slippery at the muddy areas. You can use a walking stick to help you on the way – I borrowed one at the place I stayed, Ramon Guesthouse.

TAPPIA WATERFALL

The waterfall is another good option of hike in Batad. It´s xx m high, and you visit it at the same day that you go to the rice terraces.

The beginning of the trail is the same for both hikes (rice terraces or waterfall) – at certain point you´ll see a sign showing the waterfall way.

But I think the best option is to go first to the rice terraces – from the viewpoint you can take the stairs that take you straight away to the waterfall trail.

And you can swim at the waterfall! Enjoy!

TREKKINGS AROUND BATAD

There are many tour agencies offering a 3 days trekking from Banaue to Batad and region. I didn´t do it, but it can be a good option too.

TO CHILL

Batad is the perfect place to chill out, and to read a book! You can´t even use internet there, so you´d better relax e seize the day!
