Tasting wine and cheese, chocolate, charcutarie, coffee, and pairing beer and snacks at Cape Town

If you´re a foodie and if you are looking for something different to do in Cape Town, this tour is perfect for you. At the Foodie Thursdays you spend a whole day eating delicious food such as cheese, charcuterie and typical South African snacks, drinking local wine and beer, learning different ways of preparing coffee and also getting to know the proccess to make chocolate.

The cool thing is that you visit places that aren´t mainstream – places that you probably wouldn´t hear about, but that are awesome.

Additionally, you visit some tourist attractions of the city, that are related to the food history of Cape Town, such as the Company’s Gardens and Bo Kaap.

HOW IS THE TOUR

It´s a full day tour, that happens on Thursdays. They pick you up at your hostel at 10AM, and take you back about 5PM – also, they can dropp you off at a cool Food Market that happens on Thursday´s nights.

These are the places visited during the tour:

– Origin Café: you start the day at Origin Cafe, where someone explains you about the different ways of brewing coffee, and you get to try different types of coffee as well, from many regions in Africa. Also, they show you the roasting process and explain everything about it.

–  Company’s Gardens: this is a cultural stop – at this place they explain you how Cape Town started to develop when the Dutch decided to stay here, and how this place was important for the beginning of the agriculture in the city. Nowadays it´s a botanical garden, an it has an area allocated for community allotment gardening.

While walking in the gardens, you try a local snack: rusk, a dry cake that you eat putting it first inside a Rooibos tea, to make it softer.

– Devils Peak Craft Brewery: a very good craft brewery, focused on ales. At their Tap Room you have an amazing craft beer and snacks pairing – 5 beers for 5 local snacks. They also explain you all about the different types of beer that your tasting. Just delicious!

The brewery is located at Woodstock neighbourhood, an alternative area of the city, where you can see lots of cool street art.

– CocoAfair Chocolatier: time to eat some dessert! At CocoAfair Chocolatier you can try as many kinds of chocolate you want – there are some very different, such as Chai Chocolate.

The visit also includes a tour inside the factory, where you learn everything about the process of making chocolate, and also get to try a bit to prepare it. Also, in the end you have a delicious hot chocolate.

The chocolatier is at the Old Biscuit Mill, a very interesting place also in Woodstock, where on Saturday’s mornings there´s a very good Food Market.

– Frankie Fenner Meat Merchants: this is a very interesting place – it´s an ethical butchery, free range and hormone free. Also, apart from being a butchery, it´s also a restaurant and a wine bar.

At this place you get to try the biltong, a cured meat, the most famous South African snack, perfect to be eaten while drinking beer.

– Bo Kaap: you´ve probably seen photos of the capetownian colorful houses. This is Bo Kaap, a very pretty and friendly neighbourhood, mostly muslim, where the ex slaves stablished themselves after the slavery was abolished.

This region is famous for the Cape Malay food, that is a big influence in the Capetownian cuisine. There you visit a spices store and also have a snack from Biesmiellah, a very good Cape Malay restaurant. Their samosas are delicious.

– Culture Club Cheese: last but not least, you finish the tour at Culture Club Cheese, a very cosy place where they have many kinds of cheese produced by themselves. It´s a perfect place for pairing wine and cheese!

And that´s how you end your day feeling totally satisfied and very happy! You can also visit the Thursday´s Food Night Market after the tour, they can dropp you off there.
