Ciclying and tasting wine at the Stellenbosch wineries
Ok, maybe you´re thinking that cycling and drinking wine is not the best combination, as you might get drunk and not be able to cycle properly. Don´t you worry about that. This tour is a wine tasting, you don´t drink that much, and also, you do exercite a lot!
With that being said, I have to tell you that I do think that cycling and wine tasting is a perfect combination! It´s a different and cool way of visinting the winelands around Cape Town. You experience Stellenbosch in a different way, enjoying astonishing views of the vineyards, cycling through the nature and refreshing yourself with very good local wines. I just loved it!

The tour is in Stellenbosch (about 50Km from Cape Town), but the starting point is at the Bikes n Wines office/cafe, at downtown, in Cape Town. You gotta be there about 9AM, from there they take you to Stellenbosch.
The meeting point there is in Asara Farm. Arriving there you get your bicycle, helmet and a water bottle, and finally start cycling. Many people that are staying at Stellenbosch start their tour there.
You cycle mostly through dirty roads, inside the vineyards and farms, but some parts of the tour are also on the road as well. The guides are very good, they keep the group organized and safe during the way. If it´s a big group, there are two guides, one leading in front, and the other at the back.
The distances change at each tour, but in average you cycle for 9-12km. It´s not a super hard ride, but it´s also not that easy, there are many uphills on the way, which will definitely demand some effort.
It´s recommend to wear confortable clothes and closed shoes, and to cary water with you. Also, don´t forget to put on your sun lotion, even during the winter the sun there is very strong.
Bloggers tip: the lunch is not included on the tour, so if you are on a budget, carry some sandwiches or snacks with you.
WINE TASTING
You visit 3 wineries during the tour. The first one we visited, after about 20 minutes cycling, was Lovane, which is in a pretty cool place. You do the wine tasting at a basement, in a spot that looks like a cool bar. At this winery we had 4 different tasting, and also visited their cellar, very interesting.

From there on you keep cycling for about an hour, going through beautiful scenaries, until you arrive at Skilpadvlei, the second winery. This one is in a beautiful and huge farm. There you taste 4 more wines, white, rosée and red, very good ones.
After chilling there for a while, you hit the road again. Then you have about the same time cycling, until you get to the place where you started the tour, at Asara. Intead of going straigh away to the wine tasting, there you first have the lunch break (the lunch is not included in the tour), and just after that you do your third wine tasting.
At Asara you taste 3 different wines, before heading back to Cape Town. You arrive at Cape Town around 5:30 PM.
Bloggers tip: if you like the wines, you can buy them at the places visited, so make sure you carry a backpack with you during the tour.
WHO DOES THE TOUR
I did the tour with Bikes n Wines, and I would definitely recommend it. I had a blast! It´s a lovely way of visiting Stellenbosch and enjoying the amazing views, and also trying delicious wines. Lots of fun!
The guide, Fabian, was amazing, very friendly and organized the group very well. If you like cycling, nature and wine, this tour is a great option for you!
The tour costs 680 rands (Aug/16), and includes the cycling equipement, the guide, a water bottle, the transfer (Cape Town to/from Stellenbosch) and the wine tastings at the three wineries. Totally worth it
